How to Convert CGPA to Percentage
Different Indian universities use different formulas to convert CGPA to percentage. The most common formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (used by CBSE), but many universities have their own specific formulas.
For example, AKTU uses (CGPA - 0.75) × 10, while Anna University and VTU's current 2022 scheme use CGPA × 10. Using the wrong formula can give you an incorrect percentage — which matters for job applications, higher studies, and visa processes. (Note: Mumbai University used (CGPA × 7.1) + 11 until that formula was repealed on 1 January 2026 by Circular Exam/Result/803 of 2026 — Mumbai now uses actual-marks-based conversion on request. VTU's older 2015 / 2017 / 2018 schemes also used (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 — alumni on those schemes should subtract 0.75 before multiplying by 10.)
GradeKar uses the exact formula published by each university's academic regulations, so you always get the right answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is CGPA to percentage the same for all universities?
No. Different universities use different conversion formulas. CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5, AKTU uses (CGPA - 0.75) × 10, and Anna University and VTU's 2022 scheme use CGPA × 10. Some universities have moved away from formula-based conversion entirely — Mumbai University, for example, repealed its (CGPA × 7.1) + 11 formula on 1 January 2026 (Circular 803/2026) and now computes percentage from actual marks on request. Older VTU schemes (2015 / 2017 / 2018) used (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Always use your university's specific current method for accurate results.
What is CGPA?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a grading system used by Indian universities to evaluate academic performance on a scale (usually 10-point). It represents the average of grade points obtained across all semesters.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your GPA for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of all your SGPAs across all semesters. CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Credits) / Σ(Credits).
