What to include in a project acknowledgement
A project acknowledgement is a one-page thank-you that sits in the front matter of your report — after the title page, certificate, and declaration, and before the abstract. There is no marks for it, but almost every university prescribes it in the report format, so it is worth getting right. Thank people in roughly this order:
- Your guide or supervisor — by name and designation. This goes first because they steered the work.
- Head of the Department and the Principal / Director — for the facilities and the chance to do the project.
- Faculty and lab staff who helped along the way.
- Teammates, if it was a group project.
- Family and friends — the standard closing line.
Keep it to one page (about 100–200 words). Sincere and specific reads better than flowery and generic — name what each person actually did if you can.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an acknowledgement in a project report?
The acknowledgement is a short page near the start of a project report or thesis where you thank the people who helped you — usually your project guide, the head of department, the principal, faculty, and your family. It is a courtesy section, not a graded one, but most universities expect it in the prescribed format.
Who should I thank in a project acknowledgement?
Thank your project guide or supervisor first (by name and designation), then the Head of the Department and the Principal or Director, then the faculty and lab staff who helped, and finally your family and friends. If it was a group project, thank your teammates too.
How long should an acknowledgement be?
One page is the norm — roughly 100 to 200 words, or two to four short paragraphs. It should fit on a single page after your title page and before the abstract.
Where does the acknowledgement go in the report?
In the front matter: after the title page, the certificate, and the declaration, and before the abstract and table of contents. Number it with a roman numeral if your university uses that convention.
